The project

Turning a waste stream into a resource.

REUSE addresses the environmental challenge posed by coffee and olive oil production wastewater. It explores selective materials capable of recovering valuable compounds while supporting water reuse and circular bioeconomy approaches.

01

Challenge

Reduce the environmental impact of effluents with a high organic load.

02

Scientific approach

Combine functionalised zeolites, organic receptors and porphyrin-based MOFs.

03

Expected impact

Recover polyphenols and contribute to more circular water-management systems.

Challenge & relevance

Coffee and olive oil production generates significant volumes of wastewater. REUSE seeks to lower its environmental burden while capturing valuable phenolic compounds.

Lower impact

Reduce the organic burden of agro-industrial wastewater.

Recover resources

Capture phenolic and polyphenolic compounds with high added value.

Close the loop

Explore future reuse of treated water, including for agriculture.

Methodology

A four-step scientific pathway.

Materials chemistry, filtration technology, analytical methods and sensor expertise converge to selectively capture compounds of interest.

01

Characterise

Analyse wastewater and identify target compounds.

02

Design

Develop selective zeolite- and MOF-based materials.

03

Capture

Combine adsorption and filtration to retain polyphenols.

04

Monitor & recover

Evaluate selectivity, collect compounds and inform the prototype.

Key methodology

Selective filtering materials combine zeolites with organic receptor coatings or use Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs).

What is innovative?

A multidisciplinary system joins materials chemistry, selective adsorption, filtration and sensing in one recovery pathway.

Expected impact

From treatment to circular value.

REUSE aims to produce both scientific knowledge and a prototype filtering system for polyphenol recovery.

Agro-industrial wastewater
Selective filtration
Polyphenol recovery

Potential water reuse
Main outcome

A prototype filtering system using functionalised zeolites and porphyrin-based MOFs.

Value creation

Recovered phenolic and polyphenolic compounds are valuable antioxidants with potential applications in medicines and nutritional supplements.
